Canine Influenza (dog flu) is caused by specific Type A Influenza virus including H3N8 virus and H3N2 virus. H3N2 virus is responsible for the 2015 outbreak in Chicago, and it generally causes more sever symptoms than H3N8. The mortality rate of the disease is low; however, the contagiousness is high among dog population.
Canine Influenza is spread mainly through respiratory droplets from coughing and sneezing. Surface contaminated by diseased dogs can also spread the disease. The severity of the infection ranges from mild to severe. Most dogs recover within 2 to 3 weeks, but secondary infection with bacteria and severe pneumonia could cause death in some cases. The clinical signs of the disease include:
