A Rapid and Precise Diagnostic Test for the Detection of Coronavirus in Dogs
Canine Coronavirus infection (or CCV) is a highly contagious intestinal disease that can be found in dogs all around the world. Coronaviruses are single strand RNA virus that cause either enteric or respiratory disease in mammals.
Though traditionally considered a mild disease, the mutation feature of the virus still pose a threat to dogs around the world. Mutation to more virulent strains had led to severe outbreaks in USA, England, Sweden and Australia. Mutation to spread systemically also had been detected in Italy and was classified as pantropic CCoV.
Vaccine against the virus is available but provide incomplete protection, especially for pantropic CCoV. Prompt diagnosis and treatment intervention should be carried out to block the disease outbreak and increase disease outcome.
The symptoms of a CCV infection vary. In adult dogs, the majority of infections will be unapparent, with no symptoms to show:
- Single instance of vomiting
- Explosive diarrhea
- Anorexia
- Fever(rare)
- Mild respiratory problems
- Depression
